5 Essential Books by Howard Zinn

Howard Zinn would have turned one hundred years old on August 24 this year. A lifelong activist and historian, Zinn took a famously democratic approach to telling the American story that centered the Black, Indigenous, and working-class experiences long overlooked by typical history books. Zinn’s work, critical but fair, unflinching yet hopeful, forever changed the way we look at the past. If you’re new to Zinn’s work, we’ve compiled a reading list to get you started.

8 Unconventional Beach Reads for Your Summer Reading List

Whether by the ocean or on the neighborhood park bench, we think the best part of the summer season is reading outdoors. And while rom-coms and thrillers might get top billing on most “beach read” lists, we’re celebrating our thirty years of publishing social justice–oriented nonfiction and fiction from around the world with a set of new and classic books, selected by our staff from our own list and from some of our indie publisher friends. These picks will challenge and inspire you—even on your getaways.

More than 240 anti-LGBTQ bills have been filed so far in 2022 alone, with more than half of them targeting trans youth.

Independent Bookstore Day 2022

Saturday, April 30th is Independent Bookstore Day, a day to celebrate and show some love to the indie bookstores who provide an invaluable service as cultural anchors in our communities, places of discovery and learning, and as venues for conversation. 2022 brings a return to in-person festivities with stores across the country hosting booktalks and other special events. We're celebrating Indie Bookstore Day by revisiting events hosted by our indie bookstore friends.

11 Books on Climate and Environmental Justice for Earth Day

The original organizers of Earth Day, celebrated in the United States on April 22nd every year since 1970 and globally since the 1990s, were inspired by the campus teach-ins and demonstrations of the 1960s. The first Earth Day consisted of protests held across the United States with the goal of raising awareness to protect the planet from deadly pollution and environmental degradation.
