Saturday, April 24th is Independent Bookstore Day, a day to celebrate and show some love to the indie bookstores who provide an invaluable service to our communites. This year's festivities may look a little different from years past, but are still an opportunity to support the stores that are cultural anchors in our neighborhoods, are places of discovery and learning, and are a venue for conversation.

Over the past decade, right-wing nativists have stoked popular hostility to the nation’s foreign-born population, forcing the immigrant rights movement into a defensive posture. During the Trump years, advocates had few opportunities to consider questions of long-term policy or future strategy. We now have a once in a generation opportunity to remake our nation's broken immigration system.

Today we celebrate Paul Robeson’s 123rd birthday (1898-1976). Once named America’s number one entertainer, Robeson was one of the most important public figures in the 20th century. Receiving international fame and popularity, Robeson used his celebrity platform to advocate for equality, independence, and peace for people all across the world.

Black women have been at the forefront of movements for justice and liberation for centuries—though their histories and voices have often been overlooked. As we continue to reflect on the lessons of this Women’s History Month, we’re presenting this list of landmark reading by Black women.
