I Was Meryl Streep’s "Plus One" at the Golden Globes

Sunday night I went to the Golden Globes. As Meryl Streep’s date.

Just hours after the New Jersey State Prison and the Southern State Correctional Facility banned Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, the ban was lifted. The controversial ban was widely denounced after the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey filed an Open Public Records Act request indicating that the two prisons had banned the books as a matter of policy.

Becoming Ms. Burton won the first Goddard Riverside Stephan Russo Book Prize for Social Justice this past October and was recently nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work—Biography/Autobiography.
