In his three decades as managing director of Pantheon Books and his two decades as founding director of The New Press, André Schiffrin (1935–2013) introduced American audiences to international thinkers and writers from Günter Grass, Julio Cortázar, and Marguerite Duras to Michel Foucault, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and R.D. Laing. He also published dozens of American thinkers, many of whom were unknown when he brought out their first books and who went on to become household names and prizewinning authors. Among these are Noam Chomsky, John W. Dower, Barbara Ehrenreich, Frances Fox Piven, Edward Said, and Studs Terkel. He was the author of several books himself, among them The Business of Books, A Political Education, Words and Money, and Dr. Seuss & Co. Go to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of America’s Leading Comic Artists (The New Press).
