Stable, affordable housing is foundational to community wealth building. It never comes easy. At this event The Lines Between Us: Two Families and a Quest to Cross Baltimore’s Racial Divide author Lawrence Lanahan asks three Baltimoreans how they are helping renters and owners to live where they choose, build wealth in a community they care about, and fight outside pressure on affordable housing.

Panel:

Matt Hill, attorney with Public Justice Center, co-authored the Baltimore Housing Roundtable report Community + Land + Trust: Tools for Development Without Displacement. He was co-counsel on a housing discrimination complaint that led to a settlement with Baltimore County intended to create 3,000 affordable housing opportunities in some of the county’s most prosperous areas.

Adriana Foster is a leadership worker with United Workers. She has worked with the Baltimore Housing Roundtable’s “20/20 New Vision for Fair Development,” which seeks funding for permanently affordable housing and local employment in vacant renovations, and with the Charm City Land Trust, which seeks to acquire and develop land for the community’s benefit in East Baltimore’s McElderry Park neighborhood.

Johnette Richardson is the deputy director of Neighborhood Housing Services Baltimore and the former executive director of Belair Edison Neighborhoods, Inc. At both organizations, Richardson has tried to create and preserve homeownership in city neighborhoods, and attract development that is supported by the community.
