Brown Is the New White: How the Demographic Revolution Has Created a New American Majority, Steve Phillips’s call to action for the entire progressive movement, is garnering national attention just as this year’s presidential primaries heat up. It was #8 on the New York Times bestseller list for Race and Civil Rights books in March 2016 and reached #10 on the Washington Post nonfiction bestseller list during the week of February 14, 2016.

The book, a searing indictment of the Democratic Party, takes an unvarnished look at the voting patterns among whites and people of color in America and reveals how the past has created current conditions that will have revolutionary implications for U.S. politics in 2016 and beyond.

Phillips, who is a co-founder of PowerPAC.org, the social justice organization that conducted the largest independent voter mobilization efforts backing Barack Obama, Cory Booker, and Kamala Harris, has appeared on media outlets such as NBC News, MSNBC, and WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer Show, and the book has been featured in The Nation and Salon

To amplify the book’s message Phillips has also embarked on a nationwide book tour that has taken him to cities including Baltimore, New York City, and Oakland, frequently in partnership with organizations such as the Center for American Progress, ColorOfChange, and 18 Million Rising.
