Ethan J. Kytle and Blain Roberts, authors of Denmark Vesey’s Garden: Slavery and Memory in the Cradle of the Confederacy. In Denmark Vesey’s Garden, Kytle and Roberts trace the propaganda surrounding slavery back to right after the war, when former slaveholders spreaded a romanticized version of the Old South. At the same time, former slaves worked to reveal the truth. These rival perspectives endure to today, and the authors examine existing monuments and public rituals, along with Charleston’s tourism industry.
