This event considers the case for full electoral participation in the United States—and whether universal voting is best achieved through a requirement to vote, similar to what Australia has used since 1924. The event brings to campus E.J. Dionne, a Washington Post columnist and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Miles Rapoport, a former Secretary of the State of Connecticut and current Senior Practice Fellow in American Democracy at the Harvard Kennedy School. E.J. and Miles will be discussing their new book, 100% Democracy: The Case for Universal Voting. The event will also feature discussion of a new book by University of Georgia professor Shane P. Singh, Beyond Turnout: How Compulsory Voting Shapes Citizens and Political Parties.
