R. Emmett Murray (1939–2008) was a longtime newspaperman. He retired in 2003 after thirty-two years as copy editor, suburban editor, assistant city editor, and news desk editor at the Seattle Times. During his career, he served several terms as president of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild, worked as the guild’s interim administrative officer in 1980, and was a frequent member of bargaining teams negotiating contracts for news, advertising, and circulation employees. Murray is the author of The Lexicon of Labor: More Than 500 Key Terms, Biographical Sketches, and Historical Insights Concerning Labor in America (The New Press).
