Jaan Kross (1920–2007), an Estonian writer, was arrested by the Soviets in 1946 and spent nine years in exile and labor camps in the Soviet Union’s eastern regions. Five of his books have been translated into English, including Professor Marten’s Departure and The Czar’s Madman, both published by The New Press.
