Sunday, February 9, 4 PM: Author Event with Janet Dewart Bell, a social justice activist with a doctorate in leadership and change from Antioch University. An award-winning television and radio producer, she lives in New York City. She will be in Eugene to participate in the Derrick Bell lecture at the University of Oregon School of Law where her late husband was the dean. Her book "Lighting the Fires of Freedom: African American Women in the Civil Rights Movement" (The New Press) has just come out in paperback. This has been identified as a "new and noteworthy book" by the New York Times. Bell was inspired to write the book as a tribute to her own mother, a hardworking maid whose financial and emotional support helped make it possible for Bell to participate in the Civil Rights Movement herself.
